When shopping for light fixtures, you'll notice ratings that indicate where a fixture can safely be used. These ratings — dry, damp, and wet — are set by safety standards and tell you how much moisture exposure a fixture is designed to handle. Using the wrong rating in the wrong location can be a safety hazard.
Dry rated
Dry rated fixtures are designed for indoor use only, in areas where there is no moisture or humidity. These are suitable for living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms, and other fully enclosed interior spaces. Do not use dry rated fixtures in bathrooms, kitchens, or any outdoor location.
Damp rated
Damp rated fixtures can handle humidity and indirect moisture, making them suitable for covered outdoor areas and moisture-prone indoor spaces. Good locations for damp rated fixtures include:
- Covered porches and patios
- Bathrooms
- Laundry rooms
- Garages
Damp rated fixtures should not be exposed to direct rain, water spray, or standing water.
Wet rated
Wet rated fixtures are built to withstand direct exposure to water, including rain, splashing, and hose spray. They are suitable for any location, including fully exposed outdoor areas. Good locations for wet rated fixtures include:
- Open decks and patios without overhead cover
- Exterior walls and entryways exposed to rain
- Pool and fountain areas
Wet rated fixtures can be used anywhere a damp or dry rated fixture would be used, but dry and damp rated fixtures cannot substitute for wet rated ones in exposed locations.
Quick reference
- Dry rated: Indoors only, no moisture
- Damp rated: Covered outdoor areas, humid indoor spaces
- Wet rated: Any location, including direct water exposure
