Choosing the correct size chandelier or pendant ensures that your fixture looks balanced in the room, fits the furniture, and provides the right amount of light. The wrong size can make a space feel awkward or under- or overlit.
Step 1 – Measure Your Room
- Room Dimensions: Measure the length and width of the room in feet.
- Formula for Fixture Diameter:
- Add the length and width of the room (in feet)
- Convert that number to inches → This is approximately the ideal diameter of the fixture.
- Example: Room is 12’ × 14’ → 12 + 14 = 26 → 26” fixture diameter
Step 2 – Consider Table or Furniture Size
If the fixture is over a dining table, kitchen island, or console:
- Width: Fixture diameter = 60–70% of the table width
- Example: Table width = 36” → Chandelier width = 22–25”
- Length (for rectangular tables): Fixture length = 2/3 of table length
Step 3 – Determine Fixture Height
- Ceiling Height Consideration:
- Standard 8’ ceiling → bottom of fixture should hang 30–36” above table surface
- Add 3” for every extra foot of ceiling height
- Room without a table: Ensure there is at least 7’ of clearance from the floor to the bottom of the fixture
Step 4 – Layer and Style
- Ensure fixture matches room design and scale
- Small fixture: Works for smaller tables, corners, or rooms <100 sq ft
- Large fixture: Anchors larger dining tables, living rooms, or open spaces
- Consider multiple pendants instead of one large fixture over long tables
Step 5 – Lumens / Brightness
- Calculate approximate lumens needed for the room (optional but highly useful)
- Example: Living room 12’ × 14’ → 1,500–3,000 lumens total
- Helps customers choose bulbs or integrated LED fixtures
Step 6 – Optional Tips
- Dimmable fixtures provide flexibility for mood or task lighting
- Multiple smaller fixtures can replace one oversized fixture for even light distribution
- Check the weight of the fixture to ensure proper ceiling support
