Why dimensions matter
Understanding how lighting fixture dimensions are measured helps you choose the right fixture for your space and avoid surprises when it arrives. Fixture dimensions are listed on every product page and refer to specific parts of the fixture — not the overall installed size. Use this guide to understand what each measurement means.
Height
Height refers to the measurement of the fixture body itself, from the top of the canopy to the bottom of the fixture. It does not include the length of the cord, chain, or downrod used to hang it, unless otherwise noted. Always add the hanging length to the fixture height to calculate the total drop from the ceiling.
Width
Width is the horizontal measurement of the fixture at its widest point. For rectangular or linear fixtures, width typically refers to the longest horizontal dimension. Use this measurement to ensure the fixture fits proportionally in your space and does not extend beyond the surface below it, such as a dining table or kitchen island.
Diameter
Diameter applies to round or circular fixtures and refers to the measurement straight across the widest point of the fixture. Use diameter the same way you would use width — to assess how the fixture will look and fit in your space. As a general rule, add the room's length and width in feet and convert to inches to get a recommended chandelier diameter for that room.
Extension
Extension is the total distance the fixture hangs down from the ceiling, measured from the ceiling canopy to the lowest point of the fixture. This measurement includes the hanging hardware such as the cord, chain, or downrod plus the fixture body. Use extension to confirm the fixture will hang at the correct height for your space and that it clears any surfaces or walkways below.
Chain length
Chain length refers to the length of the decorative chain used to hang certain fixtures, such as chandeliers and pendant lights. Most fixtures with chains allow you to adjust the length by removing links. The chain length listed on the product page is the length as shipped — confirm whether it can be shortened or extended before purchasing if a specific drop length is important for your installation.
Downrod length
A downrod is a metal rod used to hang ceiling fans and some pendant fixtures at a fixed length. Downrod length refers to the length of the rod itself, not including the motor housing or fixture body. Standard downrods are typically 6 to 12 inches, but extended downrods are available for high ceilings. To calculate the correct downrod length, subtract the height of the fan or fixture body and the ceiling canopy thickness from your desired total hanging height.
Quick reference
- Height: Fixture body only, top of canopy to bottom of fixture
- Width: Widest horizontal measurement for rectangular fixtures
- Diameter: Widest measurement across round fixtures
- Extension: Total drop from ceiling to lowest point, including hanging hardware
- Chain length: Length of decorative chain as shipped, often adjustable
- Downrod length: Length of the hanging rod only, not including fixture body
